GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 754346
GTK print dialog needs a job queue tab
Last modified: 2015-09-24 15:45:33 UTC
When i print a pdf (or else) file under a gnome-shell (3.16.3) session, i expect to get all the data/settings/info in the same place. But there is no tab to find/list/display the job queue; and its a real pain to find/use external commands/features to get the unknown jobs list left by an other session. This problem has first been reported on Launchpad as lp:1468624 As per Till comment (#7) i'm reporting that request here.
when a printing task is started, it happens that some old jobs are still in job queue and so are printed first instead of the wanted one. Usecase from a Wily gnome-shell session: - want to print some pdf files - double click on the pdf to get it opened - select 'print' from the top right corner icon - a 'Print' diolog box opens, showing the active printer and 6 tabs to set the printing parameters. At that step, the user expect to find 'all' the relative data concerning that active printer: a tab listing the job(s) queue and opt-in options to deal with. So the problem here are: - there is not all the required info/data/settings viewable at once in the same place as expected, and then the user is disapointed with its problem(s).
The job queue is in the control-center printer panel. I don't think we need to duplicate it in the print dialog.
Thanks Matthias for the answer, but i still hope you will accept my point of view, as a user usability request: - 'control-center printer panel' we access via 'System Settings' -> Printers can list the job(s) but seems offering minimal options. - this is a separate feature, far away from the dialog box opened when a printing job is started. - the Print Dialog Box is fully blind about the job list. And finding/opening a dispatched feature (control-center printer panel) is not an optimal usability. - if duplicating a feature is not a solution, at least the Print Dialog Box should be able to call (via an icon or else) that feature; even if i still consider a dedicated job tab added to the Print Dialog Box should be a better user friendly design.
Thank you for the report but I also think that print dialog is not a place where you should see queued print jobs. Opening an application which would show you this wouldn't work because of so many environments gtk+ can be run in.
