Description zaxebo 2015-08-15 14:14:48 UTC
"user should be able to select a rectangular region in the gnome-map and export it as png image."

(This feature is available in Google earth and in KDE marble too)

Hi!

Thanks for filling this bug! I would like to understand the use-case before adding features to Maps.

When would this be used? What does it add that for instance a printing of a route would not add?

Thanks again!

'printing a route' will be a good feature. But that feature has nothing to do with this feature request.

This feature request of being able to select a region has no route concept in it. For example:

EXAMPLE 1) There is mid-size lake (very zig-zag shaped lake, not a round one).
And now I want to take a picture of lake with small amount of coastal area in it.
Now, in this case, I do not need a route. Route emphasizes that I am coming from somewhere and I want to go somewhere. Whereas here in my suggested example, I am not interest in route to the lake, I am interested in lake (and some surrounding area) itself. This exported image, I will like to include in my .odt report made on lake.
Now, as this lake is not round one, but a zigzag shaped , hence only I can select a correct rectangular region, which I want to export.

EXAMPLE 2) In the example above, replace the lake with a "large housing society"(residential colony) with a walled boundary. I do not want the route/way to the housing society, I am interested in the society itself. I want to have a exported map image of the large housing society itself, so that my child can include it in his 'school report' on essay on topic "My residential colony"

EXAMPLE 3) In future when there is a KML/KMZ file support in GNOME-maps(as shown in roadmap). Then using this KML feature, "user1" can not just create routes, rather using this "user1" can show spread of developers on a particular open source project (or, spread of members of some humanitarian club) in "entire world".
So there is no route here, "user1" shows just each collaborators in the project ,as Pins by using future KML feature in the GNOME-maps. But now "user2" wants to zoom ( in the map+KML created by user1) and the "user2" wants to show just only users participating from USA, and then export it as image, so as to include it in his .odt (libreoffice) report
