1. Right-click a calendar
2. Save it as /tmp/foo.ics (or anything, anywhere on the local system)

Result: Evolution hangs and needs to be killed

Thanks for a bug report. A backtrace of the stuck evolution would help, to be sure, but I believe you face bug #746276, whose fix will be released the next week. I'm marking this as a duplicate of the other bug report.
