Description ilker 2015-08-04 01:10:03 UTC
Nautilus gives core dump after trying to change the view type. This happens only when the animations are disabled using the gnome-tweak-tool. To replicate the bug :

1- disable the animations (for example using dconf or gnome-tweak-tool)
2- open nautilus and press the "change view" button (the one next to the search icon)
3- nautilus hangs and gives a core dump after a while

I observed this in two different fedora 22 installations.

Thanks for taking the time to report this.
Without a stack trace from the crash it's very hard to determine what caused it.
Can you get us a stack trace? Please see https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/Bugzilla/GettingTraces for more information on how to do so. When pasting a stack trace in this bug report, please reset the status of this bug report from NEEDINFO to its previous status. Thanks in advance!

Comment 3 ilker 2015-08-08 22:58:45 UTC
Dear Andre, I added the stack trace following the steps in the link you sent. However I can't change the status back since it only give me two options : NEEDINFO and RESOLVED.

best,
Comment 4 Georges Basile Stavracas Neto 2015-08-21 02:59:49 UTC
Can't reproduce it here. Does it still happens with Nautilus bleeding edge (aka git master)?
Comment 5 ilker 2015-08-21 04:31:49 UTC
Sorry I can't test it anymore since I had to switch to another distro (for
other reasons) which uses 3.14. It works fine on 3.14, but I will report if
I see it again.
best,

Closing the bug. We'll reopen it if necessary.
Comment 7 jeremy9856 2015-11-19 13:35:27 UTC
I have this bug in Fedora 22 x64 (Gnome and Nautilus 3.16.2, Nouveau driver).
I can confirm that it happen only when the animation are disabled.

There is a duplicate here : https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=754782
It has been reported here too : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1252098

Placement bug

I was trying to reproduce the crash on Fedora 23 (Gnome 3.18) and it didn't happen but Nautilus now crash when you change the icon view and size a few times and go to preferences (animations enable and disable it's the same).

Plus there is this "placement bug" as you can see on the attachment again when you change the icon view and size a few times.

Jeremy,
Can you try with nautilus 3.18.2? I fixed something that could cause that in 3.18.2

It's already with Nautilus 3.18.2 on Fedora 23
Comment 11 spetreolle 2015-12-12 14:08:02 UTC
I can reproduce this too on Fedora 23 with nautilus 3.18.2-2.
Shorter steps:
change from icon list to columns view, back to icon list and open the Preferences.

Comment 12 Carlos Soriano 2015-12-12 16:57:32 UTC
Using Templates (so you have a New Document menu entry in the context menu) both of you Jeremy and Spetreolle?

If so, that one is fixed in 3.18 branch and will be available in 3,18,3
Comment 13 jeremy9856 2015-12-13 13:34:12 UTC
I'm using Templates (New Document in the context menu).
Thanks for the fix !
Comment 14 spetreolle 2015-12-13 13:49:36 UTC
I'm using Templates as well.
I'll report downstream.

I'm sorry, but after upgrading to nautilus 3.18.3 on Fedora 23 I still have the bug, and also that rectangle reported in a duplicate bug, the difference is just that now it is gray also with the GTK+ theme I'm using (Arc), instead of being transparent as it was before upgrading - and it's still a GtkVBox.

Are you using templates?
Comment 20 fedeb1995 2016-01-05 19:45:24 UTC
I don't know what they are, so I think I'm not using them; anyway the bug has been fixed on Fedora 23 (by some other package's update I think), but just for the search view; it's still present for "Other locations" and when I switch between icon view and list view, though.

What do you mean is still present with Other Locations?
Can you attach a stack trace?
Are you using plugins?
Comment 22 fedeb1995 2016-01-07 17:44:10 UTC
I mean there still is a blank GtkVBox when I click on "Other locations" section on the left panel, as per the following screenshot (or if I start it with the other-locations:/// URL and then I switch to Home for example).
I'm using nautilus-search-tool, nautilus-open-terminal, nautilus-dropbox and nautilus-image-converter extensions; this is the terminal output I managed to collect:

Comment 24 Georges Basile Stavracas Neto 2016-01-08 14:11:14 UTC
This issue is caused by NautilusTerminal extension, and shall be reported in the respective bug tracker of it.
Comment 25 fedeb1995 2016-01-09 11:05:16 UTC
Oh, you're right, removing the extension solved it. Really nice!

It could still be nautilus.

Can you disable one by one plugin and see which one causes the blank box? if with all of them happens, disabling all of them also fixes the issue?

Thanks
