GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 751422
Support signature after quote
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:26:31 UTC
Dear developers, it would be really nice if Geary supported adding the signature after the quoted message instead of before it. Current behaviour: text signature On Foo at Bar, Baz <baz@yay.foo> wrote: > quoted message What I would like (potentially as an option): text On Foo at Bar, Baz <baz@yay.foo> wrote: > quoted message signature I have a fairly long (mandatory) signature, so this would really be much appreciated, as it facilitates inline replies tremendously.
If you're doing inline replies, you shouldn't (IMO) be top posting. We currently support bottom-posting through the select-to-quote feature, and there is ongoing work to make universal bottom-posting a user option (bug 731181). Are these enough for you?
And I meant to point out that, when bottom posting, Geary puts the signature after the cursor, which follows the quote, as is sensible.
I don't think software should prescribe how I should format my emails (that's the same as the "you shouldn't open files >2MB in your editor" argument lots of Atom fans used...). The "old" ways are very nice if everyone follows them, but let's face it, non-technical people always top-post with the full thread in the quote. But since nobody wants to read the signatures (because they're usually just stuff your employer requires), but may want to look into the history, I think it's a very common use case to top-post with the signature after the quote. Personally, I'd be fine with universal bottom-posting, but I think top-posting with message after the quote is something many people want to do.
Hi Lorenz, Would something like the Thunderbird's behaviour as described in https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=731181#c1 work for you? I.e. this workflow: 1. Select message text to be quoted 2. Click Reply 3. Press up to shift cursor above quoted text 4. Start typing?
Hi Michael, sure, that sounds like a sensible solution. I kinda stopped using geary though because of the high volume of writes it had at the time (a write per second, not nice with an SSD). I'll probably have another look soon, though, I much preferred the general feel of geary to Thunderbird...

Note that this has not yet been implemented, but is possible that it might be given some positive feedback such as this. Thanks.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
