Description Carlos Soriano 2015-06-12 13:26:41 UTC
The floating bar has been a problem and not a clear UI for it's use.
Main problem is that is an overlay, so it obscures the content, and that it's not always present.

Would be good to get rid of it and provides other ways to:
- Indicate the view is loading. This is currently done in the title of a tab as well.
- Size of selected item?

So far that's the important parts that floating bar provides.
Comment 1 Gerry T. 2015-09-05 08:34:17 UTC
Indeed, the floating bar can be very annoying (e.g. last item in files list cannot be seen). Hence a redesign is very appreciated.

In the redesign, please also integrate again the feature to display free disk space (bug 684943). This was a very handy feature in the status bar, before the developers removed it. Please consider its re-inclusion in the redesign of the floating bar. Thanks.
Comment 2 Marty Fried 2015-09-13 18:10:58 UTC
As much as I like Nautilus compared to any alternatives I've used, I recently started using Nemo because of this annoyance. There are times when I am forced to mess around with the window size simply to see the full list of files in my preferred view of detailed list. I hope to be able to return to Nautilus soon.
Comment 3 jeremy9856 2015-09-16 07:50:01 UTC
That's exactly why I and a lot of people think Gnome devs are "crazy".

https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/3c39u2/do_you_want_nautilus_files_have_the_ability_to/

https://felipec.wordpress.com/2013/06/12/the-problem-with-gnome-3/

They remove useful features, here the status bar. When they replace the removed feature, because sometimes they just remove useful features, it's often with something less usable, here the floating bar. For years they say this new feature is better and don't listen the feedbacks. And finally years after, here now, they finally say "The floating bar has been a problem and not a clear UI for it's use."...

But they won't reintroduce something that work. No, no, no, they will probably make something worse...

I love innovation and it's great that the Gnome devs try to improve things but it have to better than the old thing not the other way around...

Bugzilla is not a discussion forum. Please keep comments related to the specific issue being tracked.
Comment 5 Juraj Fiala 2015-10-01 13:59:35 UTC
The only issue I have with the floating bar is that it doesn't respect the mouse (doesn't move out of the way). For comparison, look at ff's one. It barely obscures content, and if you need to look what's beside it you just put your mouse over it and it moves out of the way, shortening it or switches sides if needed.

Yes, sometimes the floating bar contains long text which is useless when it switches sides, as so it's still obscuring content. Shortening it (e.g. text of filename) would decrease it usability of displaying selected content.

Would it be alright to reintroduce status bar?
Comment 7 jeremy9856 2015-10-15 07:32:40 UTC
If no one have a better idea I really think that we should reintroduce the status bar. It's easy to use, it never hide the content, it never get in the way of the user, it's well tested, can display the free space (bug 684943), it's not annoying, etc...
Comment 8 jeremy9856 2015-11-09 17:34:32 UTC
Any thought on the return of the status bar ?

We're not ignoring this bug, and have it on our minds for future developments. However, it also intersects with a number of other plans we have, so we're going to have to wait and see how things play out.

Ok, no rush. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Would you mind elaborating on that? I love looking at new design ideas.

Allan, have you some infos to share with us ?
Comment 13 GMontag 2016-02-14 15:33:42 UTC
This issue needs a higher priority. It has been an issue for years and has only been acceptable because we could enable the standard status bar. Now that the standard status bar is gone, the floating status bar is a usability nightmare. When using Nautilus in list view (my preferred layout) the bar is always in the way, blocking access to and readability of the last item in the list and is a serious hindrance to productivity. While I wish for the option to have a standard status bar, the current situation is unacceptable and I would like to turn the floating status bar off completely.

Stop asking for updates. The bug will be updated when there are updates.

It seems that the floating bar has been removed ?

This is the GNOME repo: https://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/log/

Ok thanks. It seems that is a WIP right ? I was misled by this comment https://www.reddit.com/r/gnome/comments/4ero4w/nautilus_floating_bar_finally_removed/

A lesson to never trust a source that is not GNOME provided :)

And you'd certainly fix the typos in the commit message if you merged it, right? :)

Most probably the author of the patch. Not sure how this is related though...
Comment 22 Bob 2016-05-16 13:38:19 UTC
Well, 16.04 is out and there is STILL NO STATUS BAR. A little floating one is still there but no option to display remaining disk space. I've been reading through old comments and we've been complaining since 12.04 and still nothing. Am I to assume that our opinions on this extremely useful feature are actually being ignored, despite replies suggesting the contrary?...
Comment 23 Gerry T. 2016-05-16 19:28:23 UTC
@Bob: Thank you for your comment. Gnome is currently at version 3.20 and Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 currently only delivers version 3.18. Still, you are right in your point. In 3.20, there is no status bar or other floating bar replacement. Carlos mentioned that they are working on it.

If "display remaining disk space" is your main goal, please look at this bug 684943. It is being discussed there. First steps towards a future implementation is done. I hope for Carlos and other Nautilus developers that they find the time to tackle these two problems. Thanks in advance!
Comment 24 Bob 2016-05-18 21:10:13 UTC
Thanks Gerry, appreciate your response. Best wishes to Carlos and all the developers; lets hope they can come up with an "at a glance" option soon - no more opening up disk analysers and properties windows every five minutes. So glad I kept 12.04 on the old laptop! (16.04 is still lovely though so thanks to everyone involved)...
Comment 25 André Klapper 2021-06-18 15:49:14 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
