GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 750759
Better privacy built in
Last modified: 2015-09-23 00:41:03 UTC
I know that there is ad blocking and such built into Epiphany already, but I had a few enhancement ideas that make Epiphany AWESOME and potentially a top competitor on the GNU/Linux platform. My thoughts were if code for these could be somehow integrated: EFF HTTPS-EVERYWHERE EFF Privacy Badger uBlock I know there really isn't a way for extensions to be implemented, but it would be superb to see these 3 things built into Epiphany. I know the devs for uBlock said they'd be willing to work with web browser devs for implementing an extension of sorts for the browser
It'd be best to have separate bugs for separate features. There is one at least for HTTPS Everywhere and maybe one for uBlock.
I don't really want to use Privacy Badger since it has higher risk of breaking sites than a manually-maintained list. We can use the EasyPrivacy ABP filters (which should be a VERY quick hack to get working well) or we should use the Disconnect filters (which would be ideal, but presumably not a quick hack), which Firefox is experimenting with and which apparently speed up browsing by 50% since they block so much crap: http://tuxdiary.com/2015/04/10/firefox-tracking-protection/ I thought we had another bug for this, but I can't find it, so let's use this bug to track implementation of one of the above. See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=725093 for HTTPS Everywhere. uBlock is just a different implementation of AdBlock Plus filters, right? We have that already.
Note: privacy blocking should be an option you can turn off, but it should be enabled by default. We'll need to decide if it should be conditional on the adblock option (it would be useless for privacy if it doesn't block ads) or if it should replace the adblock option. Also note that the Privacy Badger authors seem to be hoping for Disconnect to replace Privacy Badger: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/06/ex-mozilla-engineer-calls-for-tracking-protection
Please also consider bug 711683.

We > have that already. I don't know all that ABP has. uBlock does have a number of filters, but it also does a lot of blocking scripts from loading to your computer in the background. I'm not sure if ABP does that, correct me if I'm wrong. I think uBlock does kind of what ABP and Disconnect does combined
