The preferences help page doesn't include any description of the "Use three pane view" or "Always watch for new mail" options.  The latter option is a bit subtle, so it really needs to be explained well.

I also snuck in an update of the text describing where notifications 
appear under Gnome Shell.  I don't know that we want to keep that 
updated, though, so maybe we should just take out that text completely.

Given that most DE's now have system wide prefs for managing notifications I'm inclined to pull out the notification pref altogether, but this will be good until then.
