GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 74988
gdm provides no way for a user to cancel if login name is entered incorrectly
Last modified: 2004-01-07 02:00:15 UTC
If a user enters his/her login name incorrectly and accidentally pushes ok, there is no way to cancel. Instead the user has to enter a bogus password and wait for the login to get rejected.
I /think/ this is a security issue. Note that when running 'login' at the prompt there is no way to do this either. Can someone close this if so?
just as a note: both kdm, windows and xdm login screens appear as below ---------------------------- | user name: _______________ | | password: _______________ | |____________________________| and solaris uses a similar setup to gdm, although it does allow you to cancel a login to my best recollection. personally i prefer the kdm look as it reduces the complexity of the ui.
And both kdm and xdm will have problems once you have a different pam setup. For example AFS password might also be asked, or a different authentication then a password might in fact be used. I again however forgot for a "Cancel" button :( Oh well, after the freeze perhaps
