I am using shotwell and storing photos in ~/photos which is a symlink to ~/annex/photos.

~/annex again is a git annex'ed (https://git-annex.branchable.com/) directory,
which converted all pictures into symlinks:

After viewing a couple of pictures, shotwell becomes unusable slow, also deleting pictures from the camera (the confirm dialog) takes ~30s to disappear.

Using shotwell on arch linux:
