i'm using Linux Arch 3.19.3-3-ARCH x86_64 GNU/Linux and mate 1.8.1
I don't see any notification icon in tray or notification area, but I get notified with popup notification when receiving an email message.

Supporting the system tray is a contentious issue.  See bug #721967
