GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 747872
negative selection crashes Gimp
Last modified: 2015-07-06 13:29:54 UTC
sometimes, i use the rectangle or ellipse tool. Usually the selection settings are always set to additive selection, as this mode is the most useful for me. However, some tool presets/eraser/the switch from keyboard to mouse and vice-versa seem to change the selection mode even, when i did not change selection mode by myself, from additive to subtractive, its stange. So i stumbled across this bug: cutting (cmd+x) in subtract selection mode crashes the gimp - sorry, just for curiousity, why allowing subtractive selections when no selections are there ?? sounds not reasonable. -
The selection mode can be switched to Subtract and get stuck there - bug 457288 and bug 732160 are similar. It is somewhat hard to reproduce intentionally, though - at least on Windows and Linux platforms. Crashes on repeated copy&paste are reported as bug 747687 - to me it looks like somewhere in the gtk+ clipboard handling code, but I am in no way an experte there. Regarding as to why setting the tool to subtract mode is allowed even when there is no selection: it isn't that uncommon for workflows to set this mode on purpose for one of the tools tool, then use a different selection tool (or menu command) to get an initial selection and subtract from that. The restriction to disallow that would be rather arbitrary. If you meant something different here, then the connection with the issue you reported - the crash - is not apparent to me. P.S. What made you connect the crash to the subtract selection mode? those actions aren't supposed to affect each other, is the any indication in your workflow that they do?
i checked both bug reports but they are different. Gimp crashes every time when i try to cut a selection, when the selection mode is set to subtraction. And i saw it several time and checked it intentionally too, so i do no guesswork. my preferred selection mode is always the additive selection mode, because i use a hotkey to do the subtraction, so i dont change this anyway. However, in some situations Gimp switches my selection mode setting to subtractive mode because of the change of tool presets/eraser/the switch from keyboard to mouse and vice-versa. Another bug, which i dont know where it arises. So, now when i try to make a selection and try to cut it, believing the selection mode is set to additive mode, but for some strange reason is set to subtractive mode, Gimp crashes after executing cmd+x Not to contradict you, but i see subtractive selection useful only when a some selection is already done.
more info. Its a clipboard issue that includes copy, paste, cut, copy visible. Gimp is very unstable and crashes all the time when using those commands.
So it is a duplicate of bug 743717 then?
(In reply to Michael Schumacher from comment #4) > So it is a duplicate of bug 743717 then? yes.
