It would be really great if one could integrate the possibility to display Panoramio (or similar services e.g. Flickr) pictures into Maps.

For me it is an often used use case and I would really appreciate it.

Hi! Thanks for the suggestion!

I do not quite understand what you mean. Where would the images be displayed? And how? Do you mean like adding a picture to a particular place? Like a street view sort of thing?

I think he means something like this.

I meant something like
http://www.panoramio.com/map/#lt=45.965411&ln=9.317436&z=4&k=0&a=1&tab=1&pl=all

Isn't it so that Google Maps used to do that but then switched to this new mode? Panoramio view looks way too cluttered so if we want to add this, it'll have to be a toggle.

I tend to agree with Zeeshan about the layout. But this is a design question.

Codewise this could be done by using the Mapilary (http://www.mapillary.com/developer.html) API, Mapillary is a crowd sourced street view service.

We could query a bounding box and get pictures from that area, or I guess get pictures from some other place if street pictures aren't what we are after which I guess it is not.

I am however not sure at all about this. :) It seems like a feature to consider when we have all the basics in place. I might be wrong tho so I welcome designer input!

I totally agree, that one should be able to toggle this mode :)

When do I use it? when planning a trip or I'd like to learn something about an area,

If one compares the two designs
1 - Google Maps today and
2 - Panoramio

I think #1 gives only a view overview pictures. One does not know, e.g. where the pictures of the beach has been taken. But one sees the unblocked map.

#2 is cluttered, agreed. But gives the possibility to see where the pictures are exactly taken inclusive priority. The big ones are the most favored ones.

I personally think #2 is much more helpful for exploring. Probably one would need an additional clutter control which can be used to control display the density of pictures to be displayed.

About priority: I totally agree this has not the highest prio. But in my opinion a map is used not only for navigation but very often for exploring a new area. And a picture says more than 1000 words.:) And the lack of this feature is the only reason why I need to use Google Maps (in those cases).

If technically all basic features are in place, I cannot judge. But it looks fairly simple to be to be implemented.

Panoramio, Flickr and other services with geotagged pictures differs from Mapillary in that Mapillary is intended for street view type applications, meaning that the pictures might be pretty uninteresting by themselves but pretty interesting when combined.

I could see something like how Panoramio works as a toggleable layer above the baselayer. I had some ideas for this in the past where you'd have a bunch of interesting layers activated via togglebuttons below the baselayers in the layer menu.

I'd like to add, that not only pictures from online services should be displayed, but even local images from the hard-disc if they have a location in the exif tags.

Perhaps we need a connection to GNOME Photo here.
Comment 9 Jonas Danielsson 2015-05-08 10:54:53 UTC
This sounds nice, yes, But I am not sure it is something we want to do right now. We do not have the developer bandwidth for it. And it falls a bit outside of our mission as a "simple Map application".

That said, if some designer feels this could be done in a nice non-intrusive way. And somebody wants to work at it. I will happily look at patches.

Thanks!
