Apparently this bandaid was only required because of a gtk+ 3.16.1 regression caused by fef7d65685a3a45a47f968cab6b5e5150323f606 which was fixed (by a revert) in 3.16.2 (7963f689296ad06dff0e0d426bd9324de1dec7aa). 

Sorry for the confusion, I should have checked this before calling it a fix..
