GUri is being proposed for glib. As a proof of concept, I did try to make
use of it in gvfs. Beware that those patches haven't been tested!

It seems a fair amount of URI manipulation is done with SoupURI (which
is similar to GUri), however, since libsoup doesn't support GUri, I
didn't try to replace for the later yet, I assume it would be
straightforward.
