GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 746378
Backspace and delete keys
Last modified: 2015-05-30 09:17:47 UTC
Pressing the backspace key doesn't go back a directory. Pressing the delete key doesn't delete a file, only when Crtl + Del.
You will be very happy with 3.16, now delete key deletes files =) Backspace is not the shortcut to go back in the directory. It is <alt>Left What did make you think backspace was the shortcut?
I use Linux Mint, but installed antergos to play with the lattest release of gnome and see the changes, and in nemo and windows explorer you can use the backspace key to return to the previous visited directory. Not shure about it but I think that nautilus in Ubuntu behaves the same way.
The (mis)use of Backspace for 'Go back' in file browsers goes back to old Windows Explorer versions. Nautilus was doing the same in the past, but we've stopped doing it since Backspace somewhat too close to Delete.
Is it no longer possible to configure this using a custom shortcut set up in .config/nautilus/accels?
This report is about two very different things: --> [Delete] as "Move to Trash", which is bug 648658 --> [Backspace] as "Go Back", which is bug 692852. Both particular issues have already been reported into our bug tracking system, so let's close this bug report, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. (In reply to Gaute Hope from comment #4) > Is it no longer possible to configure this using a custom shortcut set up in > .config/nautilus/accels? It seems that ".config/nautilus/accels" was dropped as part of the transition to GAction [0]. I don't know if there are plans to bring it back. You may file a new bug report about this.
