Description Arnaud B. 2015-03-16 13:16:44 UTC
When the HighContrast theme is used, Software should display for applications the icon the user will be used to; so the symbolic one if found, or the HighContrast one (with a fallback on the hicolor one).

So you mean if GIMP is not yet installed and you search for "gimp" in the software center then it should show the gimp HC icon? I'm not sure that's going to work; we'd have to ship a ton of extra icons and the tarball is already kinda big.

I’m seeing it from the user point of view: if you install an application associated with a specific icon, you associate this icon with the application (and Software’s UI is designed for this visual association). So having a different one when it’s finally installed is bad: you’ll have to take time to find your app’ in the Shell’s UI, that’s a quite bad first contact; and having back the first icon when you go back to Software to install some extensions to (or remove) the app’ is bad also.

I don’t have any magic technical solution. From a personal point of view, I’d be for only using symbolic-like icons in the Shell (and everywhere), whatever theme is used; that’s the only way to make everyone happy, and it comes with a great visual identity. But I doubt such a radical solution (to this problem and others) will find consensus in the GNOME design team, so let’s not hope on it. =)

I've asked for a spec extension on the appstream list.
