GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 745405
Can't disable on-screen keyboard in GNOME 3.14
Last modified: 2015-03-02 11:12:46 UTC
See video for visual example (sorry for distortion, unsure why gtk-recordmydesktop glitched like this): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzjgIzr7PDo. This issue has been personally verified in all popular distros to date (Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 w/ gnome3-staging ppa, openSUSE 13.2, and Fedora 21) on Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series (3137). When I use the touchscreen on this particular netbook so that the mouse disappears, then initiate the Overview and begin typing in the search for an application, the on-screen keyboard appears, but I don't desire for it to be on -- my physical keyboard works just fine. I want to disable it or turn it off so I can keep using my normal keyboard, but can interchangeably switch pointing devices between the touchpad mouse and touchscreen. I checked in the Universal Access area, but "On-screen keyboard" was already turned off. I initiated the overview and typed "fi" for Firefox, and the on-screen keyboard came up. I would recommend that if the on-screen keyboard is set to "off" in the Universal Access area, that means it's off, and won't come up, as in disabled. Apologies, I'm not a developer or savvy in programming -- I'm just an end-user. Grateful for all the hard work of GNOME developers. Thanks! JD
EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I'm in the middle of a search in overview with the on-screen keyboard visible and move my mouse (I believe making it the dominant touch device) the on-screen keyboard disappears. I guess that another desired resolve would be that I could use the touchscreen without the on-screen keyboard appearing.
