GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 744122
Holding shift and clicking anywhere in a window drags it and snaps it to grid.
Last modified: 2015-02-11 23:57:01 UTC
In previous versions of Gnome, if I shift-click-drag a window on its title bar, the window is dragged and snapped to grid. Now, the shift event seems to be captured no matter where I click on a window resulting in not being able to use the shift key to perform selects or properly navigating in a CAD program. Please let me know if any additional information would be useful or if this is a setting which can be changed. What's the output of: gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences mouse-button-modifier for you?
Thank you for the reply! The output of that command is: 'disabled' Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide. Thanks!
Does this happen with every window? Say, does it happen with xterm?
Yes, Chrome, Firefox, Terminal, and every other application seems to exhibit the same behavior. Also, when I was initially searching for an answer to this question, I did run across another posting with someone having the same issue: http://superuser.com/questions/833101/cant-multi-select-with-shift-key-on-fedora-21 Unfortunately, there are no replies on that thread.
And does this happen all the time or does it just start happening after a while? Are there any messages in your journal that might be related to this? If you create a new user account does it happen there? I haven't been able to reproduce this yet.
Great idea! Sure enough, there is no problem when creating a new user and logging in. I'll try to debug it and see if I can figure out if it is an extension gone haywire or some other difference between a new profile and my 'upgraded' one. I only had a couple minutes to debug this and was just able to try the new user - I'll also dig into the journal later today hopefully and see if there are any clues in there. Thanks!
I ended up removing my ~/.config directory and going through the initial Gnome setup again. I attempted to remove one directory at a time to narrow it down to exactly what it was, but somehow messed it up (or rather it repaired itself) during the process and now I can't break it again. Anyway, everything seems to work now and I guess it was just some strange combination of upgrades and settings that didn't work out from 20->21. The fix was simple enough so I'll close the issue. Thanks for your help!
