The smoothing algorithm used for the "Smooth images when zoomed out" option isn't effective for large, noisy photographic images, making them appear noisier than expected for a given scale.

The attached images show the effect with "Smooth images when zoomed out" selected, not selected, and a version created in GIMP using linear interpolation. The GIMP image shows the expected reduction in noise, whereas the smoothed EOG image isn't much less noisy than the unsmoothed one.

That's a known problem we have with cairo's filter selection.
