GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 743289
"Smooth images when zoomed out" has little effect on large, noisy photos
Last modified: 2015-02-10 18:30:53 UTC
Created attachment 295082 [details] Example images demonstrating the issue. The smoothing algorithm used for the "Smooth images when zoomed out" option isn't effective for large, noisy photographic images, making them appear noisier than expected for a given scale. The attached images show the effect with "Smooth images when zoomed out" selected, not selected, and a version created in GIMP using linear interpolation. The GIMP image shows the expected reduction in noise, whereas the smoothed EOG image isn't much less noisy than the unsmoothed one.
That's a known problem we have with cairo's filter selection. --- Thanks for taking the time to report this.
