Description Montana Woodworker 2015-01-14 18:14:35 UTC
OS=Windows 8.1, but this has occurred with Win7 as well.
When my image completely fills my window in single window mode, I find that if my pen crosses the image border thereby touching the window itself, my toolset begins to misbehave, which can include jumping from one tool to another or, today, making my foreground and background colors switch rapidly from one to the other. To fix this, I must restart Gimp (v. 2.8.14). This has happened on earlier versions of Gimp as well, so my workaround is to make sure that I leave space between my canvas and the window itself, including the docked tools, etc. I keep hoping this problem will be solved with each new version, but not so far. Thanks for your excellent work on this fine program. It's amazing and I have recommended it to others on numerous occasions.

Hello,

Each device (the mouse, a tablet pen, even your fingers if you have a tablet with touch support are all considered different devices) may have its own settings, in particular they may be on a different tool, with different foreground/background colors.
So I am wondering if you are using a graphics tablet for instance, and if the "misbehavior" you are experiencing is not simply your device switching somehow in GIMP (hence you see tool and color switches). Are you using a tablet or any other device, other than the mouse? And if so, are you maybe touching the mouse when you leave the window with your pen, or any similar action which could be considered as a device change?

Other than this kind of supposition, I don't really understand the problem. Maybe a screencast video could be interesting to understand better what triggers the misbehavior. In particular I don't really understand the steps to reproduce the issue ("if my pen crosses the image border thereby touching the window itself") and the ones to apparently avoid the issue ("make sure that I leave space between my canvas and the window itself").
So more detailed steps, and maybe a small screencast, could help me understand. :-)
Thanks.

Hello, I finally have a small .avi clip that shows the abnormal behavior. As you will see, the tools area flickers/switches when the tool (airbrush in this example) reaches the central pane of the single-window mode. Please note that my image is at full width. I hope that this clarifies my issue.

Since I really like the single-windows view, I'll be very happy if your developers can fix this annoying behavior.

Likely a duplicate of bug 771444. Fixed in GIMP 2.8.20, can you try this and report back?
Comment 6 Montana Woodworker 2017-02-10 19:19:32 UTC
I have now upgraded to GIMP 2.8.20, but, sorry to say, the problem remains. My work-around is to NEVER work at the edges of a layer when it/they abut the tool panels, etc. Annoying!
Comment 7 Michael Schumacher 2017-02-10 21:55:11 UTC
And this is input device switching?
Comment 8 Montana Woodworker 2017-02-11 15:43:56 UTC
Please refer to attachment 301750 [details] above, which shows what happens.
Comment 9 Michael Schumacher 2017-02-11 15:48:49 UTC
Seen that. And this is what bug 771444 is supposed to address, and we seem to have people reporting that it did.
