Description Alexander 2014-12-07 15:05:46 UTC
Hello!
I used ubuntu gnome 12.04 and when I moved to ubuntu gnome 14.04 I noticed very annoying behaviour - window zooming stopped working.
You can see that gnome wiki explains features of gnome shell
https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/CheatSheet
Quotation from there:
"Using a vertical scroll over a particular window zooming in on it by bringing it forward."
But now it is not true anymore because of https://bugzilla.gnome.org/process_bug.cgi. It seems that bug broke backward compatibility.

You can see post 28 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=686639#c28. Why zooming is useful. Plus some people do not use workspaces at all. So panning workspaces becomes unuseful for them.

What do you think about disable/enable checkbox in gnome tweak tool for zooming windows in overview mode? Many people noticed missing that usefull feature. Google search can prove it.

Thanks for pointing that out, I slightly updated the documentation there (though bringing it up to date from 3.4 which is the version documented there would be quite a bit more work - for a start, all screenshots except for the app switcher and a11y switcher ones are outdated, not to mention "broken backward compatibility" like power-off by default ...)

Uhm, no. User interface changes are not an issue of backward compatibility. Or are you suggesting that we should not have been allowed to make any visible/behavioral changes since 3.0?

No, a hidden option sounds pretty horrible. If someone can provide an implementation for window zooming that does not have the issues the old one had[0], it can use a modifier to differentiate it from workspace switching (e.g. ctrl+scroll).
