This looks like it's almost certainly a theme bug. What theme are you using here? Also, that's not the GNOME release that ships with Ubuntu 14.10, so that's an external repository of some sort? We customise the packed notebook label, but we don't do anything special with the GtkNotebook styling itself, so it seems unlikely to me that Meld is the problem here.
Thanks Kia. You're correct. The theme is the culprit. I was using Ambiance. I've switched it to back to the default and this problem does not exist. The GNOME release is from the PPA that's used to install GNOME 3.14 as outlined in http://ubuntuportal.com/2014/11/how-to-upgrade-gnome-3-12-to-gnome-3-14-in-ubuntu-gnome-14-10.html Will I change the status of this bug to RESOLVED-NOTABUG?

I'm probably going to do that, but first I'd just like to know... is Meld the only app with this problem? I'm a bit weirded out that it would just be us with this issue. If the Ambiance theme as a whole has some issues with GTK+ 3.14 though, that wouldn't surprise me at all.
I'd still like to know why we're seeing this, but I'm happy to call it not-our-problem at this point. Thanks for the bug report.
