I agree it'd be a better default.  Might be problematic for some users (ssh'ing to an ancient system where there's no such terminfo -- but they probably know how to fix it), but the current TERM=xterm is also problematic for some users without a trivial workaround (e.g. you can't have a profile that automatically launches an app using 256 colors, without writing a wrapper script).

If really required, gnome-terminal's Compatibility tab could have a new setting to bring back TERM=xterm.

Any objections?
