GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 740404
More tiling options
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:52:36 UTC
Half-maximize / tiling to left and right is great, but there ought to be more options: * tiling to top and bottom * one third tiling * tiling all visible windows
Please provide use cases for these options. "ought to be" is not really an argument. :)
top and bottom: displays in portrait mode. Current left/right tiling is useless here. on third tiling: widescreen displays. tiling all: well, this is more of an extra feature and a memory from the days of good old tiling window managers.
While I would personally love this, it's probably safe to assume it's not mutter's job to provide a complex tiling wm functionality... In fact there are already some extension that try to implement that, but ultimately fail because mutter's own tiling is "special", as tiled windows are put in a META_TILE_LEFT/META_TILE_RIGHT tiling_mode in which they are drawn borderless and the geometry is forced even for terminals this is my proposal: how about adding a META_TILE_SHELL tiling_mode which can be set by shell extensions? this way all the tiling logic, grid shape and fancy stuff can be implemented directly by extensions!

Hello, I think the following may be usefull : https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=786772 Basically, allowing plugin to turn windows as a tile where they want. Best regards
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
