Description Allan Day 2014-11-18 11:23:32 UTC
The home page that Yelp displays when first launched doesn't really draw you in or appear very attractive. There are a few reasons for this: the use of text with no images, the layout, the large number of topic items, the lack of preamble, and the nature of the content itself.

This is a particular issue because Yelp is automatically launched the first time you log into a new GNOME installation. It's the first thing that you see.

A while ago, I created some mockups for a new home page, which attempted to address these issues:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/help/help-start-2.png

The three sections on the page are:

 1. The existing getting started documentation.
 2. A page, or set of pages, which describe what's new in the latest release. I had imagined that this could be a reformatted version of the release notes.
 3. The existing user docs.

The layout of each of the three boxes is modeled on gnome-software, which uses a combination of defined colours for the box backgrounds and some SVG assets. This allows the view to be scaled as the window size changes. We don't *have* to take that exact approach though, and I'd be happy to adjust the designs based on what is technically feasible.

Provisionally adding as a 3.16 target, since this would be a big improvement for the initial out of the box experience.

Some of my early work toward a design like this, from back in January:

The original mockup didn't look particularly refined, so some additional design work has been done here:

This is the current favourite:

Has any progress been made here?
If not, this is not a 3.16 "GNOME Target" as we are under UI Freeze for 3.16 now.

removing target
