Description Harry Chapman 2014-11-17 10:31:05 UTC
Hello,
I had a look to see if this suggestion was already made by someone, but I would love it if evolution had the option to always load images from a remote source (ie from the sender's server, but *without* adding them as a contact), in line with Thunderbird's behaviour.

The way it's set up at the moment, there are a whole lot of mailing lists I receive emails from with images in them, but I don't necessarily want them as a contact cluttering up my contacts (just so I can load the image automatically...), so I'm stuck. I would much prefer to have the option to load images separated out from anything to do with contacts.

I love the look of Evolution, but it's the one feature which I'm missing from Thunderbird. Thanks for all your work on this project!
Cheers,
Harry

Thanks for a bug report. I'm not sure what you propose, I do not use Thunderbird, thus the compare is a bit foggy for me.

Could you describe how the Thunderbird works, please? If I'd guess, then they load remote images not only if the sender is in user's address book, but also when the domain of the remove resource matches domain from which the sender sent the email, aka if I receive a message from user@gmail.com, then if the content of the HTML message contains anything to be downloaded from gmail.com, like (nonexistent) https://data.gmail.com/user/image.png, then it'll be downloaded regardless the user being in any of my address books?

The problem with mailing lists is that you receive the message through it, but the From is still the sender, not the mailing list.

Hi Milan! Thanks for your response.
Sorry I should have been more specific with my original request. This article describes the process (scroll down and view the image for an example): https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remote-content-in-messages

Yeah you've got it right I think. When an email comes in with embedded images, you can select an option which says "Allow remote content from example.domain.com" (which I guess it derives from the URL of the image). In some emails, you have to select multiple domains before the images finally load (which can be slightly annoying). But overall, I find it a much better solution than having to add the sender of the email to my address book.

I made a mistake when I used the phrase "mailing list". I was trying to say newsletters from organisations/companies etc. They should always come from the same email address, but I don't necessary wan't them in my address book.

I'm not sure if other people would like this feature, but it's definitely something I miss coming from Thunderbird :-)

Aha, I see, it makes sense. Let's have this as an enhancement (these can take quite some time to implement, but I consider this feature as valid and nice to have).
