Description John Scott 2014-11-08 05:12:23 UTC
You can go to almost any page of gparted.org and GNOME will be spelled Gnome. THis is very annoying because at the top of every page it says "Gnome Partition Editor".
Comment 1 Curtis Gedak 2014-11-08 16:46:05 UTC
Hi John,

Thank you for your interest in GParted.

Is there an official spelling, including upper/lower case, of gnome that you can point me to?

Curtis
Comment 2 John Scott 2014-11-08 18:58:42 UTC
Sure. If you go to gnome.org in your browser, the title of the tab (and possibly window depending on your browser) will read GNOME. Also, this not only affects the website, but I just realized that this misspelling also affects GParted Live, the bootable live CD.
Comment 3 Mike Fleetwood 2014-11-08 19:13:09 UTC
Hi Curtis,

From the GNOME Logo & Trademarks page
(http://www.gnome.org/logo-and-trademarks/):
    * All the letters in "GNOME" should be capitalized.

From checking a few things I've found the same mistake in the following
locations:

1) GNOME Bugzilla, product description
   https://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=gparted

2) GParted source code
   UNIX manual page
   https://git.gnome.org/browse/gparted/tree/doc/gparted.8#n16
   GParted Manual
   https://git.gnome.org/browse/gparted/tree/help/C/gparted.xml#n41

I'll gladly produce the GParted source patches in a while.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your offer. Please do update the GParted source code.

I will update the web site and bugzilla.

Curtis
Comment 5 Curtis Gedak 2014-11-08 21:30:49 UTC
The following web pages have been updated:

Articles http://gparted.org/articles.php
Bugs http://gparted.org/bugs.php
Development http://gparted.org/development.php
FAQ http://gparted.org/faq.php
News http://gparted.org/news.php

The global web site header has also been updated.

The Bugzilla description of GParted has been updated.

(You might need to refresh your browser to see the updated web pages).

WORK REMAINING:

GParted Manual and Man Page - Source code.

The help manuals and man pages on the web site require updating. These are generated from the GParted source code and so need to wait until the source code has been changed.

The boot screen for the GParted Live image is a graphic picture. This will require more work to change and then will need to be included in the next GParted Live release, and also updated on the Screenshots web page.

Correctly capitalise GNOME in the Manual and man page (v1)

Hi Curtis,

Here's the patch for this.

Change to GParted Manual help/C/gparted.xml:

  Hunk 1:
It is in the document description and doesn't appear to get displayed
when just doing "gnome-help help/C/gparted.xml". Guess that the
metadata might be displayed somewhere else though.

  Hunk 2:
Can you check that this change is correct where I named cased
"Partition Editor". Displays as the first sentence of in the
Introduction. Not sure if it's correct because I don't really
understand if it is referring to the generic concept of a GNOME
partition editor or our specific implementation of the GNOME Partition
  Editor.

Thanks,
Mike
Comment 7 Curtis Gedak 2014-11-09 17:34:32 UTC
Hi Mike,

Thanks for the patch set.

Regarding your question on the case of "Partition Editor", I looked up which letter case to use and of course ran into differing opinions.

One article I read mentioned that being consistent was important.

http://www.etf.europa.eu/authorssite.nsf?OpenDatabase&Content=http://www.etf.europa.eu/authorssite.nsf/Pages/Capital+letters+and+small+letters+%E2%80%93+Upper+case+and+lower+case?OpenDocument&LAN=EN

Capital letters and small letters – Upper case and lower case

There are few rules governing the use of capitals (upper
case) in English: the main thing is to be consistent in
usage. The current view is that overuse of capitals reduces
the importance of those words which must appear in capital
and spoils the appearance of the printed page. Hence there
is a general shift away from the systematic use of
capitals. Many headings and titles whose words would have
appeared in capitals before are now appearing in small
letters. The ETF follows this trend, using a capital letter,
for example, only in the first word of a book title, and
putting the following words in small letters (lower case).

In the existing documentation it appears I have been inconsistent.

I would like to be consistent, and I would like to follow the current trend of lower case letters (E.g., GNOME partition editor).

If you have no objections, then I will change "Partition Editor" to "partition editor" in you patch and commit it.

Please let me know what you think.

Curtis
Comment 8 Mike Fleetwood 2014-11-09 20:12:25 UTC
Hi Curtis,

I just want to understand what the new rules for this consistent naming
your are suggesting, hence this questioning ...

Do you intend to use "GNOME partition editor" everywhere?
On the web site header?
In the desktop menu entry and about dialog box?
In the Manual and man page?
Etc.

$ fgrep 'Partition Editor' gparted.desktop src/Win_GParted.cc
gparted.desktop:GenericName=Partition Editor
gparted.desktop:GenericName[en_CA]=Partition Editor
gparted.desktop:GenericName[en_GB]=Partition Editor
gparted.desktop:X-GNOME-FullName=GParted Partition Editor
gparted.desktop:X-GNOME-FullName[en_CA]=GParted Partition Editor
gparted.desktop:X-GNOME-FullName[en_GB]=GParted Partition Editor
src/Win_GParted.cc:	dialog .set_comments( _( "GNOME Partition Editor" ) ) ;

Thanks,
Mike
Comment 9 John Scott 2014-11-09 21:36:37 UTC
That sounds like a good idea. As long as we are discussing consistent naming, we need to make sure that GParted is consistent too. I think GParted should be left as-is, but #1 of the FAQs says "What does GPARTED stand for?", where it should read "What does GParted stand for?". However, this is the only misspelling of GParted that I have noticed on the website, so we shouldn't have to worry too much about that.

I spoke too soon. #11 of the same FAQs says "A work around is to start gparted from..." but it should say "A work around is to start GParted from...".

Thank you John for pointing out the inconsistencies in GParted spelling on the FAQ page. I believe that I have updated the relevant areas.

Mike, your question in comment #8 has got me pondering the bigger branding picture. I will post a proposal in this report once I've had more time to think about this.

Comment 12 Curtis Gedak 2014-11-13 17:21:08 UTC
Good questions Mike. :-)

You've raised a bigger issue on how we should refer to the all items such as the project, application, name origin, and executable.

Since "GParted" is the key branding that we are in control of, I believe that "GParted" should be used in most all references to the project and application. I believe this is what we most often do.

In situations where we reference where the name "GParted" originally came from, we should use "GNOME Partition Editor". For consistency sake, let's use "GNOME Partition Editor" in all of these situations and ignore my earlier suggestion to sometimes use lower case.

When we refer to the executable we should use "gparted".

Does that sound reasonable to you?

By applying these rules-of-thumb, the following would be answered with...

(In reply to comment #8)
> I just want to understand what the new rules for this consistent naming

>
> Do you intend to use "GNOME partition editor" everywhere?

Only in situations where we are indicating the origin of the GParted name. I think our brand should be "GParted".

When we are describing what "GParted" is, it might be more useful to our users to indicate that GParted is a "graphical partition editor".

> On the web site header?

Hmm... you've got a point here. We probably should be using "GParted" in the title. I think it is important for search engines to also know it is a partition editor by the title.

Perhaps "GParted - Partition Editor"?

> In the desktop menu entry and about dialog box?

I like our use of "GParted" here.

> In the Manual and man page?
> Etc.

For the origin of the name we should use "GNOME Partition Editor". When describing what GParted is, we should use "graphical partition editor".

>
> $ fgrep 'Partition Editor' gparted.desktop src/Win_GParted.cc
> gparted.desktop:GenericName=Partition Editor
> gparted.desktop:GenericName[en_CA]=Partition Editor
> gparted.desktop:GenericName[en_GB]=Partition Editor

I believe the generic name is okay as is.

> gparted.desktop:X-GNOME-FullName=GParted Partition Editor
> gparted.desktop:X-GNOME-FullName[en_CA]=GParted Partition Editor
> gparted.desktop:X-GNOME-FullName[en_GB]=GParted Partition Editor

We should remove X-GNOME-FullName.

As best I can tell, it appears that the GNOME project did not end up
using this keyword. At least I have not been able to discover any
evidence of it when using the GNOME 3 desktop in Fedora 20.

LibreOffice does not use X-GNOME-FullName.
https://www.libreoffice.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=37996

My /usr/share/applications/libreoffice-writer.desktop file does not
include X-GNOME-FullName.

My /usr/share/applications/gimp.desktop file does not include
X-GNOME-FullName either, and GNOME was built upon the GIMP ToolKit.

Originally I added X-GNOME-FullName to implement a GNOME goal:
https://wiki.gnome.org/Initiatives/GnomeGoals/CorrectDesktopFiles

Bug 600048 - Correct desktop files - Name and Generic Name
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=600048

> src/Win_GParted.cc:    dialog .set_comments( _( "GNOME Partition Editor" ) ) ;

I think this is okay as is.

Your thoughts are welcome.

Hi Mike and John,

Along the lines of "don't sweat the small stuff", I added a change to Mike's patch from comment #6 to include the gparted.doap file for "GNOME Partition Editor" consistency (I hope you don't mind Mike). The gparted.doap file is used to display a title in the GNOME web git browser. This updated patch has been committed to the git repository for inclusion in the next release of GParted.

The relevant git commit can be viewed at the following link:

With the release of GParted 0.21.0 and GParted Live 0.21.0-1 as of Jan 27, 2015, all references to GNOME should now be upper case.

This includes the GParted Live boot screen shown on the screenshots web page.
