GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 739601
Space bar no longer advances to next selection in Reconcile Window
Last modified: 2018-06-29 23:35:54 UTC
Historically, prior to release 2.6.1, when the space bar is used in the Reconcile window, the reconcile status is toggled and the selection highlight advanced to the next line in the column. Starting, I think, with release 2.6.1, the selection highlight no longer advances as the reconcile status is toggled. This change in behavior is not documented, and appears to be a regression. I would like it to be restored to the previous type of behavior as a default, and a preference added to either enable or disable the automatic selection of the next item. It is possible that this changed when Bug 721211 was resolved, and I am sure that the issues resolved there must remain resolved. That makes the problem more interesting. Users have reported that this change of behavior is consistent in Windows, Linux and OSX.
Thank you for your report. This is however not related to bug 721211 and it is not a regression but a redesign of the reconcile window. The new design attempts to be much more in line with the gnome human interface guidelines and consistent with how lists usually behave in gnome/gtk applications. That means you can now have multiple lines selected in the same way as you do in other parts of gnucash and even other gtk based applications. This opens up new ways of handling reconciliation that were not possible in the old window. As explained on the mailing list the automatic advancement was not consistent with the rest of gnucash and while it allowed fast advancement it was also the source of confusion for first-time users. In the redesign we have tried to provide many alternatives for several use cases that should be equally fast if not faster: - if you want to mark all items as reconciled, type ctrl-a followed by ctrl-r (or space if you will which will also toggle all items selected) - if you want to mark many items at once you can use a combination of shift-click and ctrl-click to select them and then type ctrl-r, ctrl-u or space to respectively reconcile, unreconcile or toggle the reconcililation state. If you want to use the reconcile window for what it is actually intended - verifying each line one by one against your bank statement, the process is arrow-down to select, space to toggle. So while I agree the new behaviour is bad for the trained muscle memory (the habit of hitting space consecutively) from my point of view the reconcile window has become much more versatile than it used to be. What use case is not well catered for ? Finally I agree the documentation is lacking.
