There should be a feature where you can crop the image to a user defined aspect ratio. say 4:3 or 3:2 etc. possibly and additional option buttons where it says "keep height" or "keep width" with possibility of a dialog or error if the user inputs info that extends the canvas outside the image confirming if you still want to crop to this aspect

alternately, having a aspect ratio input box in the "canvas size" dialog would also work
