Description L. Kuck 2014-10-26 16:19:32 UTC
I click on the Image menu as an example, and hover over the selections. Ordinarily, in Windows 7, the highlight background is deep blue and the highlighted menu item is white. In the GIMP the menu text color remains black, barely legible against the blue background.

All of the menus behave the same.

For what it's worth, one other time I experienced this same issue on this Windows installation, I just a few days ago installed the Menu Wizard 1.16 on Firefox, and moved some menu items around. When I made a new menu, it did not pick up the white foreground and the new menu is also black on blue.

I've had the GIMP installed for some time now, with this menu issue from the start. Since the GIMP install, I have installed many other software titles and not seen the menu highlight issue.

A typical highlighting on a menu in my system

A screen shot from IrfanView's File menu, shows the typical behavior that I see on my system while hovering over a menu item. I could select to show the mouse cursor in these screen shots taken using a timed delay in IrfanView.

This doesn't look like the default Windows 7 theme. Did you change any Windows settings to achieve that look?
Comment 9 Michael Schumacher 2014-10-28 11:45:36 UTC
The strange shape around the highlighted text is handled in bug 736092.

I have five options checked in Performance Options. See screen shot. Display is boosted by a Custom 130% so I don't have to stare at small print on my software menus and dialogs. I am limited in how much I can boost this magnification because some software has a fixed-size dialog container and the text just runs off the edge.

looks like I have to submit this and go back to the bug report screen to submit my screen shot attachment.

I visited rhe other bug 736092. Renaming my .gimp-2.8 did not alter my menu appearance, as Gimp created a new folder. I do have some preferences set, so I will delete .gimp-2.8 and rename my existing folder back to its original name.

I posted the bug originally for Gimp version 2.8.10, but from Comment #4 forward it has been version 2.8.14 Therefore, if it will let me, I will change the version number on the bug report.

I'm not seeing this with 2.8.16 anymore. Larry, can you recheck?
Comment 16 L. Kuck 2015-12-20 21:52:08 UTC
Michael,
Maybe I didn't do this right. I need to try it again. I got rid of 2.8.14, ran CCleaner and installed 2.8.16. I started GIMP from the start menu pinned icon and it crashed. This program needs to close. Uninstalled 2.8.16 ran CCleaner and restarted. Downloaded, installed, started from the Start Menu pinned icon and it crashed. I'll bet that icon was for the nonexistent 2.8.14. Redownloaded 2.8.14, installed and it runs, even keeping my settings. So much for "completely" uninstalling.

Advise, please, and I will try again.

Did it really crash, or is this just the initial font cache creation?

In any case, you could have just installed 2.8.16, there is no need to run any tools that 'clean' your system.
Comment 18 L. Kuck 2016-01-18 08:23:30 UTC
(In reply to Michael Schumacher from comment #17)

I closed a session of work I have been doing in Gimp 2.8.14, and ran the install for 2.8.16 on my Windows 7 computer. Did no reboots or make use of any "cleaner" utilities.

The install ran successfully to a conclusion. I opened Start and All Programs, and found the GIMP 2 item. Hovering, it identified as 2.8.16. Clicked on it and it brought up the splash screen and a crash. I repeated the start and with the GIMP splash and crash report showing on screen, I took a snapshot of it using the IrfanView image utility's Linux-like screenshot feature.

I dragged the report out of the way of the splash screen before bringing up the screenshot utility.

splash screen 2.8.16 looking for data files, must close.

I was told 2.8.16 has solved the menu issue reported in this bug for 2.8.14, but I am unable to load the new version with this pictured result.
Comment 20 Michael Schumacher 2016-03-04 15:59:07 UTC
That startup problem would most likely be bug 760137 then.

Let's mark this bug as resolved.

Workaround for Black Text on Dark Blue Background Menu Selections

For Gimp & Inkscape
Running Windows 7 - Windows Classic Theme

I can't find a way to change the black text but windows classic theme allows change to the dark blue background.

Right Click on empty area of Desktop - choose PERSONALIZE

At bottom of Personalization Window - choose WINDOW COLOR

At Item Color dropdown - choose SELECTED ITEMS

At Color 1 dropdown - pick a COLOR that works with both white letters and black letters. I picked dark grey. - click apply.

The change takes effect immediately and you can now read the item that you are selecting in Gimp and Inkscape.

Drawback: this color affects every menu thru-out windows.

Dave, does this still happen with current versions (2.8.22)?
Comment 23 Dave 2017-05-24 07:32:59 UTC
Michael,

Have not installed ver 2.8.22 yet.
On this computer I'm running...

gimp 2.8.16
inkscape 0.92

The workaround fixed them both.

Just upgraded to Gimp ver 2.8.22

Still has exact same problem. Unable to read the menu item selected because the selected menu item has Black letters on a Dark Blue background. If you squint real hard you can almost make out which choice you are about to select.

The workaround I posted earlier still works for ver 2.8.22

This problem appears due to my choice of using Windows Classic Theme on Windows 7. I don't care for the Aero themes.

Problem affects both Gimp and Inkscape so there must be something in common that both these programs use when ported to windows.
