GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 738644
Gnome Shell doesn't launch a new instance of Nautilus
Last modified: 2014-10-27 10:24:14 UTC
When I open the applications overview of Gnome Shell 3.14.1, (Arch Linux) it appears that there is already a Nautilus (version 3.14.0) window opened, although there is none. When I click it or right-click it and select "open new window", it shows the desktop, but doesn't open a new window. It's probably the same thing as described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1270432
EDIT: On startup of gnome-shell, the Nautilus' icon isn't highlighted - clicking it highlights it and shows the desktop. From this point, everithing behaves as described above.
Do you have the option of desktop managing icons activated? Is so, can you try again deactivating it?
I too have this issue on archlinux with desktop managing icons enabled. I would like to note, however, that upon enabling desktop manage icons, the rest of the session works as expected. It is only when a new gnome session loads (with destop manage icons previously toggled on) that the issues arise.

I have the same problem with Debian Testing (Jessie) with the latest updates - which brings Gnome 3.14.0 If I enable manage desktop in Gnome tweak tool the desktop is there. But I cannot open nautilus from the sidebar or from the launcher. I have to kill nautilus from command line. It closes nautilus and the desktop icons are gone of course. Now I can launch nautilus from the sidebar or launcher and it works again. The desktop icons re-appear and stay and I can open and close nautilus whenever I want. This is really annoying, for now I have disabled manage desktop. I did not have this problem with 3.12.
