Description Paul Weaver 2014-10-03 05:01:08 UTC
I've tried to install GIMP 2.8 on this OSx 10.9.5 Mavericks machine 2 times.

First by straight download of a native build.

Then by using macports.

I thought for sure the macports route would work.

But in both instances GIMP crashes before it is fully loaded on my machine.

It is depressing as GIMP was one of my primary tools I used to use daily...

2.8.14 works fine for me on Mavericks. OS X 10.9.5 (13F34).

Downloaded from torrent via the gimp.org website.

It did appear to freeze while loading fonts and data files, but after a few minutes it loaded as normal.

Opening the app again after this first time run only takes a few seconds.

We have users who run it successfully, so it would be interesting to know why this is happening on your systems - and we should make sure that both of you got the same problem, and not just the same symptoms.
Comment 3 Jehan 2014-10-06 20:35:52 UTC
Could you rename the configuration directory, please? Under OSX, it should be under NSApplicationSupportDirectory/GIMP/2.8/. Do not delete the directory please, just rename or move it. This way if we confirm this is the problem, you can send it to us for diagnostic.

Anyway restart GIMP, and see if it starts well. If it does, it means your existing configuration was corrupted somehow. Send the old directory as a compressed archive, and we will try to determine why and how to avoid the problem in the future.

If GIMP still crashes though, I guess we'll need more info (for instance backtraces on the crash).

"NSApplicationSupportDirectory/GIMP/2.8/" means
"~/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.8/"

In this dropbox link is a very short video of me attempting to open Gimp from within a MacPorts folder in my applications AND also after pulling GIMP out of MacPorts and putting it directly in the Applications folder. In both instances you can see me click on it, GIMP briefly begin to open in the bottom right and close immediately. I did it 2 times in each location.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8l0oospeoxgr2f9/2014-10-10_13-03-49.mp4?dl=0

I'm not a developer.

I initially did download "from torrent via the gimp.org website."
As I had this problem that way I went through the process of installing Xcode, Mackports and then pulling down all the gimp files from within Terminal. It took a non trivial amount of time.

But I'm having the same issue still. So I don't understand how it could be that BOTH downloaded instances.

This mac is behaving normally with all other applications. So I'm really stumped as to why this is happening with GIMP

Comment 8 Jehan 2014-10-10 10:40:40 UTC
Hello,

I think you misunderstood. GIMP creates a configuration directory where all your settings, plugins, brushes, and so on, are saved. And it loads its config at each startup. If GIMP crashes at startup, this config directory may have corrupted data that we don't handle accordingly. So we want you to test removing it to start GIMP with a "blank slate".

As Mitch said comment 4, you'll find the config in ~/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.8/
Just move it somewhere else for the time being (move the 2.8/ folder).
Then start GIMP.

If GIMP does not crash anymore, compress the config directory that you moved earlier, and send it to us. Then we'll investigate.
If it still crashes, then we will see for other actions.
Thanks.

I agree I have not understood.

O could not find any file called 2.8 in my applications folder.

I did a general search for it and found I still had the "gimp-2.8.10.dmg.dmg file. I pulled that onto my desktop and tried to open it.

Some progrès - GIMP at least didn't crash/close immediately.

But it still does not open. It immediately went to "application not responding" and I can't do anything with it besides do a force close.

Sorry to be making such an issue for you all.
I'm very impressed with the GIMP support I'm receiving!
Comment 10 Paul Weaver 2014-10-10 10:57:19 UTC
Scratch that!

I dunno why it gave me that "not responding"

but because I didn't do a force quit on it, GIMP finally opened and is working! YEAH!!!!!

thanks so very much.
Comment 11 Paul Weaver 2014-10-10 10:59:58 UTC
Done! GIMP rocks!
Comment 12 Michael Schumacher 2014-10-10 11:14:27 UTC
So this was the creation of the font cache then.
