It is needed at least for the GutterRenderer, see the FIXME in gtksourcegutterrendererlines.c for querying the invalidation region.

For GtkSourceView 4, all Class structures should be checked to see if there is enough padding for future expansion.

Another class without padding: GtkSourceView, which is quite important.
