GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 737121
add markdown support in composer
Last modified: 2014-10-31 19:12:38 UTC
I wish I could format the message using markdown syntax instead of the buttons. As this plugin for some browsers and Thunderbird: http://markdown-here.com/

What about an option to beautifully _render_ a text email written in markdown? (instead of converting markdown to html, as bug 714723 is supposed to do, IIUC) Does geary has any ability on this regard?
Is there really any significant amount of markdown being transmitted via email today? I suppose we could do sort of a Markdown Lite: *bold*, _italics_, etc. But does anyone really transmit a full-blown Markdown message? Does it have a MIME Content-Type?
Well, no because the tools are missing. But markdown is very popular and I'm sure that many (geek) persons would rather format their emails in a plain text way rather than using buttons. As far as I remember, Thunderbird renders at least *bold* and _italics_. There's an ongoing effort to write a spec for markdown: http://commonmark.org/ http://talk.commonmark.org/t/welcome-to-commonmark-discussion/8 A small subset would be enough: bold, italics, lists and code. That makes sense. I've filed a ticket: bug #739464
