The same issue has been fixed for GTK+3: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=674264 However, there is still a number of applications using GTK+2 and the impact of this is particularly visible while using Firefox. I have backported the fix to 2.24 for testing purposes and I can verified that it solves the issue also for this version. The only condition to have it working with Firefox on Ubuntu 14.04 amd64 is to also apply fix for: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=737777 Attached is the cherry-picked patch.
