Easy to reproduce: go into gtk-demo on OSX and open a text view. Enter "((^(%%@☞➜➯↛≦∐" and it will crash.

I haven't checked the code fully to see why we might get NULL there, but yeah, the patch looks an improvement.  Please commit.
