When I'm viewing a photo I can press Backspace or PageUp to go to the previous photo, and Space or PageDown to go to the next photo.  I think the left and right arrow keys should work as well.

I tend to agree with this, I had the same issue once, I even wrote a patch, but the bug got wontfixed, so the maintainers might not agree with this RFE.
In any case, I am marking this as a duplicate of bug 712297, let's discuss this in that bug.
