GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 735370
"ago" impossible to translate
Last modified: 2018-03-26 15:40:57 UTC
The string "ago" is marked as translatable on its own. A quick look at the .glade file tells me you're trying to construct something like <duration field><"ago>, which doesn't work in some other language. For instance, in French, "3 years ago" would be translated "depuis 3 ans", which more or less matches the "for 3 years" construct. So translating "ago" to "depuis" would produce something like "3 ans depuis" in the interface, which is bad.
...and the canonical documentation is at https://wiki.gnome.org/TranslationProject/DevGuidelines/Never%20split%20sentences
il y a 3 ans is the translation to "3 years ago". depuis 3 ans is the translation for "since 3 years" or as Alexandre states, "for 3 years"
(In reply to comment #2) > il y a 3 ans is the translation to "3 years ago". > depuis 3 ans is the translation for "since 3 years" or as Alexandre > states, "for 3 years" Leslie, I don't see the point of your comment. Depending on the context, "3 years ago" could be translated both ways. I'm telling you that as a native French speaker and the French translation team coordinator. The point of this report is not to find the best translation for this string. The point was that the way the maintainers have split the string is not usable for quality translations. For more information on that issue you should take a look at the link posted by André. In the future, please refrain from commenting if you don't have a basic understanding of the issue you are commenting on.
Hmm this one is interesting since its a sentence form with widgets. The only solution I can think of right now would be to add a string that contains the widgets position so instead of having [SpinButton][ComboBox] "ago" we would have a translatable string like "%number %years ago" which will be parsed to construct the proper UI. Others suggestions?
