GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 735304
RFE: differentiate between users of the same name
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:44:42 UTC
Created attachment 284323 [details] gdm showing two users of same name and no way to tell them apart I managed to create two users for myself while testing F21. Even though the names were the same, the logins were different. As a result, when gdm came up, it had two entries with the same name, and no way to tell them apart. Even though it's a complete corner case, I wonder if there's a way to show the difference between two users of the same name?
You can set a user picture, which helps. (But it does seem like maybe the username should be shown in this case.)
agreed it's a problem... Matt's workaround is a good one. Another one would be go into the user panel and change their names explicitly (Ankur Sinha => Ankur "test1" Sinha or something)
There are quite a few work arounds. One being - don't create users of the same name ;) Another simple solution would be that user add portion of the control center add a unique image by default to all users until one is specifically chosen. *Another* would be that the user add part of the control centre pop up a message saying "a user with this name already has an account, consider differentiating." I just thought it'll be nice if gdm/gnome were a little smarter about this. I don't expect this issue to come up with personal laptops or workstations, but if there's a system in a lab for example that is to be used by team members, such an issue *can* come up. It's quite a corner case. Not a bug, just a nice to have.
no question it's a problem and we should figure out an answer. before gdm 3.2 we did tooltips to differentiate but that wasn't much better that the situation now.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
