Description Terrycloth 2014-07-03 00:45:54 UTC
THE CURRENT SITUATION:

When you add an SFTP account to Nautilus, or any other situation which would call the GNOME Keyring, the password prompt pops up in the middle of the screen. You cannot switch away from the password prompt until you enter the correct password, or click Cancel.

USE CASE WHERE THIS IS A PROBLEM:

I use KeePassX password manager for most things. KeePassX clears your clipboard shortly after copying a password, so that the password isn't saved anywhere else for long. Because of this, I have to copy the password *immediately* before I finish entering the sftp:// address, or I will be stuck at the password prompt. If I am ever not very careful about this, sometimes the password prompt catches me by surprise, and I have Cancel, copy the password, and very quickly start the password prompt again.

PROPOSED SOLUTION:

It would be easier if I could switch away from the password prompt, the same way I might click or Alt+Tab away from any other window in GNOME Shell.

I don't think it's possible to switch away from gnome shell prompts. It would probably be hard to design that into gnome-shell, but in any case this really is a gnome-shell bug.

For users not using gnome-shell, gnome-keyring already allows you to switch away from the password prompt, or minimize it.

Alright, thanks.

I see this one has been around for a while. Hopefully someone who can do something about it will notice the growing list of duplicate bugs...

I'd help, if only I knew how :(
