GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 731931
Image noise is disturbingly visible in Gnome Viewer
Last modified: 2014-06-21 12:15:50 UTC
I have used Eye of Gnome image viewer for a while. The program is good altogether. However, the viewer makes image noise disturbingly visible. As far as I can tell, this effect is only Eye of Gnome-related issue because images are shown correctly with other viewers. Image noise is so visible that enjoying the watching of many images is just pain to eyes. I provide an example, the first image sample is the view of eog. The second one is the same image opened with Photoshop CS2 (running under wine prefix). You can clearly see the difference between two. Eye of Gnome: http://s28.postimg.org/fm68f434b/noise1.png Adobe Photoshop CS2: http://s9.postimg.org/p3rlsdpcv/noise2.png Tested with eog 3.8.2 and 3.12.2. Any way to fix this?
That's probably the same as bug 665897. The noise you see comes from a lack of filtering after downscaling the image and your image is rather susceptible for this effect due to the night sky and the grass (as are images with a lot of grain). eog uses cairo for drawing (and thus also scaling). Although eog asks cairo to apply bilinear filtering in those cases it obviously still doesn't. :( --- Thanks for the bug report.
