GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 729229
metadata.exe prevents Gimp from opening some files
Last modified: 2014-04-30 21:17:09 UTC
OS - Win7 Pro 64 bit Gimp versions 2.8.8 and 2.8.10 When opening jpg files from a Canon EOS REBEL T3i Gimp freezes at the opening file dialog. The task manager shows 25% CPU usage ( 1 core ) by metadata.exe. If you kill that process Gimp will open the file and show an error re the plugin crash. Possibly something in the metadata of the jpg? Other jpg files are no problem. Attaching sample file. Tried stripping out metadata via File / Properties / Details / "Remove Properties and Personal Information" dialog but problem persists.
Hi, I think you forgot to attach the problematic file. Could you please upload it? Thanks.
It's too large... The file you are trying to attach is 6303 kilobytes (KB) in size. Non-patch attachments cannot be more than 1600 KB. We recommend that you store your attachment elsewhere and then insert the URL to it in a comment, or in the URL field for this bug. Alternately, if your attachment is an image, you could convert it to a compressible format like JPG or PNG and try again. I've dropped a sample at http://www.wiseoldcat.com/sites/default/files/IMG_0552.JPG
I've tried with the most recent gimp-2-8 development version, and I could not reproduce freeze or crash, but I tested on Linux only, not Windows. I got this error output though: ----------------------------------- While parsing XMP metadata: Error on line 46 char 1: End of element <exif:Flash> not expected in this context Metadata parasite seems to be corrupt ----------------------------------- And as expected, the image opens without problem on the master version (future GIMP 2.10). This seems hence to be a duplicate to bug 667038. I know this is not fixed in the 2.8 series, but I doubt that anyone will fix the old system now that we completely changed the metadata support in GIMP. So I close as duplicate. While waiting for GIMP 2.10, I would suggest to use a dedicated software to remove this image metadata (I suspect this dialog you talk about not doing the job correctly), if you really want to open it in GIMP 2.8. Thanks for the report. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 667038 ***
