Description moza 2014-04-24 06:52:24 UTC
This happened on a fairly newly installed laptop, just upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, with Gnome classic.

I switched on the zoom / magnifier via the accessibility icon in the top menu bar. This worked and I could navigate with the mouse on the magnified desktop. When I tried to point my mouse on the top menu bar to switch it off, Gnome-Shell crashed and the desktop suddenly came back to a non-zoomed version, but without any menu bars. It is then possible to use the file manager and everything else, but not Gnome-Shell, which makes it impossible to use the laptop via GUI.

The laptop was configured with the high contrast theme (in case this can be of help). It also had the large text turned on.

I can give more details about the hardware and configuration of the machine, but any logs or traces have to wait a bit since i've given back the computer to its user, and I don't have access just now.

When rebooting, Gnome-shell keeps the magnified setting and the problem keeps appearing with every startup. Only a restart with a reset of the settings to defaults (via tty1) made it possible to come back to normal.

Instructions for the restart (thanks to borschty on the #gnome channel) :
- quit the X session of any user
- run (in ttyX) : dbus-launch --exit-with-session gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-magnifier-enabled

The crash is likely to be bug 727824 which should be fixed in gjs 1.40.1 .

I encountered what I believe is the same bug a while back and understand it to be that Rui is indeed correct, that this bug has been fixed already.

Just to be sure, it may be useful if you could you please update your gjs to the appropriate version and report back whether the problem you found still exists once that has been done, or not.

Thanks
