Description Holstener Liesel 2014-04-10 20:14:55 UTC
I'm using banshee version 2.9.0+really2.6.2-2ubuntu2 in Trusty Tahr.

Current behaviour: Selecting the shuffle modes "Album" or "Artist" for a playlist makes Banshee play one album or artist, then stop.

Expected behaviour: These shuffle modes should play one artist/album, then proceed to play the next artist/album.

This means it's "really" 2.6.2.

Do you know if what you think should be the expected behaviour was a behaviour that a previous version of Banshee had? (I'm asking this to know if this is a regression.) If yes, can you let me know the version of banshee that had this behaviour?

Also, can you tell me what value you have for the REPEAT mode? All, Single or None?
Thanks

Thanks for pointing me to REPEAT mode. It was set to "none", choosing "all" results in banshee proceeding to the next album in "shuffle by album" mode.

I'm no longer sure if I had banshee 2.6.1 set to "repeat all", but I probably had. So I do not think it's a regression.

Still I think it's a bug. I'd expect "shuffle by album" WITHOUT repeat to play every album in a playlist, then stop, and "shuffle by album" WITH repeat to play every album in a playlist, then start again.

Possibly.

Do you mind checking if it's a regression or not? Do you have a previous version of ubuntu handy where you can test?
Comment 4 Holstener Liesel 2014-04-11 07:48:05 UTC
Now I've checked on Saucy. It's a regression from version 2.6.1.

Thanks for testing Holstener, makes sense.

BTW can you tell us if you have Gapless feature enabled? (And if yes, can you tell us if toggling this feature ON/OFF has any effect on the bug?)
Comment 7 Holstener Liesel 2014-04-12 09:02:41 UTC
Gapless setting has no effect on this behaviour.
Comment 8 Reece 2015-06-12 17:08:51 UTC
(I'm new to Bugzilla, and not sure how to go about reporting this. This bug is still marked as unconfirmed?)

I'd like to point out that I'm on 2.6.2 and seeing this bug. The gapless playback setting has no effect

If the repeat mode is OFF while shuffle mode is by ARTIST, playback will stop after a single album has played. If repeat mode is ALL, a new album will be chosen at random after one album has finished

As I would see it, the former is not expected behaviour. Shuffle by artist with repeat off should shuffle through the library, playing each album once in a random order before stopping playback after all albums have been heard once in this way. Otherwise, why has the user selected shuffle? Unless this behaviour is displayed, I would argue the shuffle by artist is pretty useless

Shuffle by artist with repeat all, as it currently stands is a bit odd. After one album has finished, Banshee chooses another totally at random, with no heed to what has been played already since the shuffle was begun. Maybe that's intended, maybe not. Two arguments can be put forth for the expected behaviour in a shuffle by artist with repeat all: after one album finishes there is an equal chance to move to any other album (as currently seen), or after one album finishes another that has not been played since the last "round" of the shuffle is chosen and when all albums have been played once in this manner a new "round" of random albums begins. In that manner, repeat all would be like starting a new repeat off once all albums have been heard once. This is what Holstener described as their expectation of repeat all behaviour, and I am tempted to agree that this would make more sense than the current repeat all behaviour

But regardless of what shuffle by album is doing in repeat all, I'm convinced the repeat off behaviour is bugged, and as Holstener said it is a regression from 2.6.1
Comment 9 Holstener Liesel 2015-12-05 16:30:13 UTC
Yes, I'm not sure either why this is still marked "unconfirmed". It seems to me all the information requested by Andrés G. Aragoneses has been given, making it clear that this is a regression from the previous version.

For me, the result of this bug has been that I've stopped using these shuffle modes altogether. Which is a pity, because they were a great feature and really used to set Banshee apart from Rhythmbox.

Banshee is not under active development anymore and had its last code changes more than three years ago. Its codebase has been archived.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping to reflect
reality. Please feel free to reopen this ticket (or rather transfer the project
to GNOME Gitlab, as GNOME Bugzilla is being shut down) if anyone takes the
responsibility for active development again.
