Description Sébastien Wilmet 2014-04-07 12:17:36 UTC
There should be a paragraph explaining that GNONE is a GNU project, with a link to the GNU website.

Explaining that GNOME is a GNU project is beneficial both for GNOME and for GNU.

In the "Free" section at:
http://www.gnome.org/about/

I propose to begin the paragraph with "GNOME is a GNU project." With a link to the GNU website.

Can someone explain why it is not explained on the website that GNOME is a GNU project?

Probably because you didn’t provide the text and nobody else knows what to write. You keep repeating that GNOME is a GNU project, but it really isn’t clear to me what the relationship between GNU and GNOME is. Most of GNOME doesn’t fit the criteria at https://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html#whatmeans, GNOME doesn’t use the GNU infrastructure but its own and I’m pretty sure the majority of GNOME developers don’t consider themselves GNU developers (not necessarily because they disagree with GNU principles but more because it’s not clear whether they are).

So by all means if you can provide clarification do not hesitate.

I've filed this bug after a discussion on foundation-list:
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/foundation-list/2014-April/msg00030.html

Is there a git repo for the content of this page:
https://www.gnome.org/about/
?

I think it shouldn't be hard to come up with a paragraph explaining that GNOME is a GNU project…

Sure, but you should be the first one to know that just because you file a bug doesn’t mean someone will automatically do the work, and here you seem to be the one that actually knows the best how to handle it.

No. It’s a wordpress instance. You need an account or you can write the text and someone will publish it for you.

As I said above it’s not as clear to me as you seem to think. It is clear that our goals and ethics align with those of GNU, but it is not clear that we’re a GNU project (reasons stated in comment #3).
