GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 727653
Interface stuck when hitting alt-tab or alt-ctrl-shift-up/down
Last modified: 2014-08-23 11:43:09 UTC
Since 3.11.x (I can't remember the exact version), gnome-shell is sometimes stuck when I try to switch the active window with alt-tab, or when I try to move a window from one destktop to another with alt-ctrl-shift-up/down. I can't find a reliable way to reproduce the bug, but it happens for me about twice an hour at normal use. It can happen when changing the desktop, or when the two windows are on the same desktop. For example, when I hit alt-tab, the window listing the different applications is not drawn, and nothing gets updated on the screen except the cursor. The interface is stuck for a random time between 3 and 30 seconds, then the active window changes as expected. If I hit other keys on my keyboards (for example other alt-tabs) when it's stuck, the commands are all executed at the same time when the interface is unstuck. I've tried to take a screencast of my problem, but as soon as the interface gets stuck the video is not recorded anymore, the end of the video file can't be read (by totem or by mplayer). The beginning of the video is OK. When the interface is stuck, I can go to a VT. All the processes, including gnome-shell, seem to be inactive. I can stay on this VT for minutes, the interface is still stuck when I go back to gnome-shell: I have to *look at the interface* (and not to a VT) to get it unstuck. There's nothing relevant in the logs. I'm using gnome-shell 3.12.0 on Gentoo 64 bits.
This bug may be related to bug #699488, especially comment 1. I sometimes get this bug when clicking on a notification too. Last note: my cursor is sometimes switching really fast between normal arrow, text selector, hand and other cursors when the interface is stuck.
"Exactly" same problem here. The desktop is virtually unusable with this bug, as I get this a dozen times in a day. I tried nailing this issue to 1 particular application. But it seems like this happens with most applications I use ( evince / emacs / google chrome / rhythmbox ). So, it probably is application independent. Can someone please bump up the priority ?
