Gitg upon first launch don't offer any kind of help on how to get started.
Might be nice to have an empty state similar to Documents and Photos with some instructions on how to get started.

I agree with this. Originally, there was actually something like that, but it got removed at some point.

This problem has been fixed in the unstable development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. You may need to upgrade your Linux distribution to obtain that newer version.
