Every time a PDF is opened a "CRITICAL" assertion failure message is written to the terminal:

(evince:<pid>): EvinceDocument-CRITICAL **: ev_document_get_n_pages: assertion 'EV_IS_DOCUMENT (document)' failed

This seems a symptom of a broken PDF file.

Are you sure this happen with any PDF? May you attach a PDF test case? (if it is too big, you can leave in some place to download it).
