GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 72598
Logout action should give users the option of a new login
Last modified: 2007-05-16 22:09:40 UTC
In winXP, the equivalent to the logout action gives the user the option of loging in as another user without loging out of the current session. This is a nice option and is easy to implement in X.
I honestly don't think this makes sense really. And I don't see how this is easy to do with X ...
This feature is already included in the ximian desktop 1.4 that i use (it may be a redhat thing though not sure) however none the less if i go to system tools and click on new login i can login as another user without logggin out as the user i'm currently loged in as, when i logout of the new session i started as a new user I am automatically returned to the previous session i had started with. I know that this easy to implement. It's a nice feature for home users who share with each other. Think about it, i'm typing on my computer, but my girlfriend needs to check her email using evolution, i simply start a new login without having to logout, she checks her email, logs out and i am automatically returned to where I was. Please consider reopening as future enhancement.
Okay, I'm confused about how this could work .... If its in Ximian GNOME, we might as well have a discussion about it then ... boc: what is your take on this
I think someone is a little confused; I don't have a 1.4 desktop handy (wiped my last one) but I don't ever recall such an option existing.
It may be a redhat thing than, but i've used the feature before, it's definately included in the menu panel programs=>system=> new login on my 1.4 machine running redhat 7.2 with ximian gnome updated daily. I guess we should ask someone at redhat to confirm. But i've used it before.
I just want to add that this is completely a feature request and I by no means expect it to be include in the shipping version of gnome 2.0.
Just for the record. There's no programs->system->new login on Red Hat 7.2. It's the first I've heard about that feature too.
I don't know, I have it on my box and all i'm running is redhat 7.2 with ximian gnome straight from redcarpet.
Okay, I'm going with populat opinion
Just for the record. It's part of GDM, the command is gdmflexiserver. you can run it from the command line. It'll let you login as another user, without first logging out
Yay, we finally get to the bottom of it ... gdmflexiserver it is ... Okay, this needs to be integrated, but conditionally so it doesn't show up if the user isn't using gdm ...

I filed a bug 102707 Since there is already an option for new login (i.e. Applications->System->New Login) when GDM is installed, I suggest simply moving it to actions menu and place it above the 'Logout' entry. That would be good from usability point of view, less confusing for users and more consistent.

Contrary to what the author of the bug request suggest, I don't think the way it's done in Windows XP is the good one. I'd rather have two separate options since logging out is somewhat different than logging in as another user.

I agree with Blazej - it's very usefull to have an easy accessible ability to open new desktop session for another user or even for same user but with different window manager. I also agree, that separate menu item for logging out and new login are more user friendly and more safe (because user can accidently make a real log out instead and then he lost unsaved information, for example in terminal or in browser windows), that ability to make new login after pressing log out. It seems problem is in gnome-panel, because items in Actions menu are hardcoded in gnome-panel's sources. I think gdm maintainer would have been included New Login (and New Login in a Nested Windows) if there would be ability to include additional menu entries (from .desktop files, like in Applications menu). It would be wise to move "New Login" and "New Login in a Nested Window" from Applications->System Tools to Actions before Gnome 2.8 This doesn't change any translatable strings, so it could be done ASAP.
New Login in Actions menu is more logical and user friendly, than in Applications -> System Tools. In other case please put Logout also in Applications -> System Tools menu.
I think maybe this bug can be considered solved by new features in .14
I don't think this is a gnome-session bug any more. It seems to have an implementation already, in gdm, and now is waiting on a change to a menu on the panel. I'm moving to gnome-panel; please move back or something if this is in error.
We have this in the logout dialog of the panel.
